Cold sore treatment

One of the problems of the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) is that once you are infected infected it stays with you for life; the only way of ensuring that you don't ever suffer from cold sores is to make sure you don't get infected by the virus in the first place. Transmission is commonly caused by kissing, and so you should be careful about kissing anyone who is infected while they have a cold sore.

Although most of the time you'll show no symptoms, all the time the virus will be lying dormant in the nerve cells, waiting for the body's immune system to be weakened enough to reoccur, such as happens when you are suffering from a cold or from stress.

What this means is that there is no complete cure for cold sores. However, the  symptoms of cold sores can be treated to maximize the healing process, reduce discomfort and prevent the likelihood of cold sores reoccurring.

In addition to contracting the virus orally non-sufferers should also be careful about becoming infected through contaminated eating or drinking utensils, while those who already have the virus should be careful not to spread the virus to other people.
