Home remedies for cold sores

Many cold sore sufferers have their own home remedies that they swear by and if you try some of the most commonly mentioned you may find that offer you relief too. Although not actual cures - see the section on treatment as to why cold sores can never be cured completely - the remedies fall into the categories of prevention, pain relief and healing.

1.  Prevention

a. Try taking L-Lysine supplements daily. Double the dose when you experience the tingling.

b. Avoid the following:

Avoid intense sunlight and apply sunscreen
Stress
Lack of sleep

c. Apply ice to the affected area as soon as you experience the tingling sensation. Some people report that this can prevent the cold sore from appearing.

2. Pain relief

a. Take a pain killer to reduce the discomfort or pain of the cold sore. Alternatively you can try using a local anesthetic.

b. Avoid acidic foods and salt, which may irritate it and can be uncomfortable.

3. Healing

a. Cover the cold sore with Vaseline or a similar product to seal it from the environment. This helps prevent secondary bacterial infection and as well as reduces the risk of spreading it to other areas of your body and to other people.

b. Use a topical vitamin E cream to help heal the sores and prevent scarring.
