What is a cold sore?

Cold sores are small sores that usually appear around the mouth, lips or nose, causing discomfort or pain to sufferers. The sores first appear as blisters, which can burst and weep clear fluid. After a few days the sore scabs over and often take 7-10 days to heal completely.

What causes cold sores

Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus I (HSV-1), which infects an estimated 70-80 percent of the population.

The HSV-1 is highly contagious and you should be careful about passing on cold sores to other people if you are a sufferer, while non-sufferers should take steps to avoid becoming infected.

Once the body is infected, the virus inhabits the nerve cells until reactivated. Reactivation varies from person to person, but common triggers include stress, a cold or flu, lack of sleep, exposure to sunlight or even menstruation.
